The service has proven to be highy successful and now has gone from strength to strength with residents booking up for one to one sessions, where they are offered support and motivation to change their lifestyle through healthy eating, physical activity and quitting smoking. Tower Hamlets residents seem to be keen to take action to improve their health. Health Trainers spend many hours with each client to identify small changes that can be made to improve their health, even if it is something as simple as walking or having more fruit. They develop plans, set goals and offer ongoing support to help local residents maintain their changes.

Our commitment to improve the health of local people continues to strengthen, and new investments made with the recruitment of two more health trainers and new services are now beginning to be felt. These investments will grow in the coming year. Our achievement in persuading people to give up smoking is one of the best amongst Health Trainer organisations within the borough. Success in reducing smoking is the biggest single action that we can take to improve peoples’ life chances and reduce the burden of disease. We will continue to develop our Quit to Get Fit, Quit for Ramadan, Quit for Life and New Years campaign. To date we have helped and supported over 250 people to give up smoking and many more are on the list receiving advice and are on the verge of quitting. This again is a major achievement for everyone working at Osmani Trust.

During the year, we launched our Healthy Lifestyles brochure offering free gentle activities and social events to help men and women over the age of 18 achieve a healthier lifestyle. The programme offers a range of physical activity sessions including gym, swimming, football, badminton, basketball, walking, aerobics, yoga and chair excersies for over 50’s on a weekly basis. Once again our Healthy Lifestyles Service is one of the best, meeting all targets thanks to innovative thinking and dedication to their role by our Health Trainers. Remarkably, we have exceeded our targets for this year as we have signed up over a thousand people onto the programme in which over five hundred people have engaged in physical activity and healthy eating sessions. In order to educate and emopower local people, the Health Trainers have also delivered various workshops at local community centres; topics include healthy living, benefits of five a day, nutrition and exercise. As well as being a huge information resource, the programme is also a great way to meet other people, to exchange ideas and make new friends.
